Social Media Impact

Social Media

Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, Pinterest, Whatsapp, WeChat, Viber, Zalo, Skype etc has become a dominant part for most of us.

As of the end of 2017, Facebook has a total of 2.07 billion users worldwide and increasing, easily being the largest social networking platform to date. How have this impacted our lives and productivity?

This post is purely based on my opinion and all the impact it has on my life personally and professionally.

Positive Impact

Level of happiness?

I signed up on Facebook for the first time in 2010, having migrated from Bebo at the time, it was still a new form of social media at the time although most people I knew has Facebook. I have family all around the world and we often contact each other every few years via mail. The introduction of Facebook has allowed us to be more involves in one another’s lives. We were keeping up to date with who was getting married, who had their first born, got in touch with my long-lost cousins. My mum was able to have some facetime with her sister in law who live in the U.S. It was good.

At School, we were able to have group works via Facebook instead of having to meet at a location. This was fairly difficult as most of us didn’t have a car, so we had to rely on unreliable public transport.

At university, this became even more convenient, as we all lived in different locations (North, South, East, West…you name it). We used group chats for majority of our group work and usually meet up once a week on the day of class. This was great as I live 1.5 hours away from Uni.

When Facebook became increasingly popular from 2013-14 onwards, I was able to locate my relatives, childhood friends etc. I found my childhood best friend in 2016, that was one of the many highlights I had with FB.

Happiness around the Globe?

Around the world, people were using Social Media (SM) such as Facebook or twitter to share important messages like fundraising activities political news, searching for missing relatives and friends, buying and selling activities and many more. Eventually, SM like Facebook became a crucial part of our daily lives without realizing it.

Negative impact

As FB become a crucial part of my life and many other people around the Globe, I started finding myself checking for updates on FB soon as I wake up, during the day and before I go to sleep. I could have easily spent about 3-4 hours just looking at random things on FB daily.

This have significantly strained my relationships with the people around me. I started talking less as I spent more time on my phone. I started allowing SM to access my pictures, and other personal details freely as I continue to upload photos of where I go, checked in to locations that I have been, tagging people that I was with. Updating status on makeup/breakup, how I feel, what I want etc etc.. I started having complete strangers following my page, liking all my activities and so on. It was getting a bit full on.

While I was in a relationship, my partner was easily spotted on my SC, news spread quickly to all my relatives etc. I got intro many troubles over that. I guess I learned my lesson the hard way by sharing less and less things about myself socially and created a more personalized sharing portfolio to only the people I want to share with.

The only reason that so many people wishes me a Happy Birthday on my Birthday is because Facebook reminded them. We have basically lost touch with human interaction, and instead substituting with digital platforms.

Around the Globe?

I started seeing people having mental break down when they fail to seek positive comments about how they look, what they do, their social status etc. It was becoming common for people to upload a selfie with the caption “ Omg I look so ugly today”, then you started seeing comments from their circle of friends like:

Omg you are so cute..

Stop it, you’re so pretty

Blah blah all the positive things to cheer them up and make them feel better. And then there goes 1 comment like “yes you are”. End of the world, people began to seek social media acceptance, addicted to likes and comments. It was becoming full on.

I have a few friends that constantly check in everywhere, updating statuses on everything they do, it started to look sad. I don’t know, after all this is my personal opinion.

2018 resolution?

I reduced my SM time tremendously over the last few years and only decreasing, I only use it for purpose now instead of boredom. I become much happier as a result, no joke !

I have started to go do more sightseeing, see more people instead of leaving comments on their page, and most importantly I have started to read more.

And I have loved every moment of it since then.

I have a lot more to tell my family and friends rather than what’s going on, on Facebook.

How to write a stunning Curriculum Vitae (CV/Resume)

I used to work for a recruitment agency and it is quite normal to go through hundreds of CVs every day and select the most suitable applicants for 1st stage interview. The trick is you don’t write your CV using a hard-to-read font or make the entire CV very colorful because we (recruiters) will have to go back and edit your details in the simplest form using the most basic template.

You will need 3 main sections in your CV.

1 – Your details (don’t put your address or DOB in your CV, it is not necessary). If you are going for a position like “Account manager” or something similar and if you have an English name, please use it instead of your actual name (Only applicable if you are Asians). I used my full name when I applied for jobs and never used to hear back, my old boss told me it was because my name as too Asians and between picking me and an English name person, I would most likely fail to be selected (yes, noted).

2 – Your education details: only include your most important achievements. Eg the name of your Degree, Certifications and the Institution that you got your certifications from. Don’t include unimportant info like your primary school details, high school achievements, unless you are applying for job WHILE you are at school.

3 – Work experience: this is the most important part. You will need to present yourself in a way that will be attractive to your employer. Outline your achievements from your previous work place, specify the time when you worked at that place. Try to make it point form, short and straight to the point.

For example:

  • I have achieved my KPI by 105% for project x.

Instead of,

  • During the time at this company, I worked on project x. My hardworking efforts and determination has allowed me to achieve over and beyond what is expected of me. I was expected to close 5 deals in a period of 1 month. However, I have been able to close 7 deals in a record period blah blah blah…

The above example is too long especially for someone who has been working at more than 5 different places

At the end of your CV, do include 2 referees from the most current 2 jobs that you have been at. this will give you more points and higher chance of being selected. For people with referee’s section left blank, we often just trash the application unless we are desperate to find people to fill a role.

Let me know if you guys would like to see a sample of an approved CV.

Ciaooo for now!

5 x Self-improvement tips

We all want to lead a better lifestyle, always want to beat the crowd and achieve something every day, but let’s be honest it’s not often so easy. Just add a little bit of determination to the ingredients and you will get to where you have set to be at. A very special person once said to me “a river cuts through rock, not because of its power, but because of its persistence”.

Follow the below tips with me and let’s be successful together.

Work hard – consistently focus and work hard. Trust me it will pay off. doing a task that takes you 10 minutes comparing to someone who would be taking 30 minutes, you will surely be rewarded whether it is materialistic or emotional.

Educate yourself – always spare some time during the day and flicks through a few pages of your topic of interest, watch the news, read your favourite book. Knowledge is power. It will make you rich.

Live your life – go to different places, travel to different countries. You will really know how little you are when you step out in this world. Life is short so I don’t want you to miss out all the beautiful things/places out there.

Stop comparing – stop comparing yourself to other people. Yes, there will be tones of people out there that are prettier, smarter, richer than you. But so what? you can’t be them and they can’t be you. Everyone is special in their own way, remember to always cherish yourself. I feel super lucky every day waking up to another day full of potentials, super lucky to not have cry for food, water and clothes.

Be honest – always be honest to all the people that are in your life. They are in your life for a reason so don’t take it for granted. Honesty will take you above and beyond capability. One lie can ruin your career so don’t do it. Admit your flaws, learn from your mistakes to be a better person every day.

Let me know how you have lived your life !

Iphone 7 feedbacks

So I have recently switch to Apple from Samsung…yes once again. There are some great things about this new phone and some things that pisses me off.

Just a little review, do let me know if you also experience the same problems as I do and/or if there are solutions to make it better.

  • Speediness – I must admit that the keyboard on the iphone are always very sensitive. You can feel that your message are being sent instantly most times, unless you are in a tunnel or a location that doesn’t have any signals (also depending on what network you are on, I’m currently using Vodafail)
  • Convenient – pretty much just about any apps you can think of unlike using a Windows phone where nothing is compatible.
  • Battery life…Lasts foreverrrrr. I used to carry a charger to everywhere I go and often charge my phone twice a day. NOW..I only have to charge my phone once every 2 days (depending on usage), this is super great for me. Yesterday I went out for 6 hours in town and when I left my phone was on 40%, came back with 19% left. I mean…its just so much better than it used to be.
  • Water resistance – Apparently it can be immersed up to 1 m depth for approx. 30 minutes, I have not tested this out myself and probably won’t risk it..but hey if i accidentally left it in the wash or drop the phone in the pool, i will not be in a panic.
  • Camera resolutions is better but still no where as good as having a Samsung.
  • Stereo speaker – Yeahhhhh its pretty loud, which is great for people who doesn’t own a hi-fi system.

  • Shifty Apple does not offer storage upgrade, how typical. So if you don’t pay over a thousand dollar, you have the standard model which the storage will run out over time with the irreversible phone upgrades (where it just take up space for every new version that you upgrade your phone to)
  • NO 3.5mm earphone jack – This has been giving the shits.. I have not tried using the wireless headphones just because. So i got this adapter for headphones where Apple reject the accessory, because its not authentic. Who does that ?! Apple.
  • Iphone 7 looks just like the Iphone 6 (why do you even bothered releasing the 7th version)
  • No warranty by Apple for water damage even tho Apple advertises that their phones are water resistance (more like a rumor)

Don’t be like me and purchase the proper headphone adapter from Apple. I will include a link below to help you guys locate the item a bit easier 🙂

Lightning to 3.5 mm Headphone Jack Adapter

Maximising savings when you don’t have to change your spending habits

There are many ways to earn money either on the side or full time from doing traditional activities like blogging, become a vlogger, makeup artist, writer/editor or things like selling your junks on Ebay, Amazon or setting up a store at the local markets on the weekends etc..

However, there has been a new trend recently when people could save up to 100% of their salary or at least 80% of their salary into their saving accounts or investment portfolio (realistically I have not been able to save much due to my high expenses but let just say the goal is to save up to at least 20% of my annual income)

so here it is..

Maximising the points on your credit cards and loyalty program cards. I have never put much thought into this until I came across an article recently about a 17 years old boy who has travelled the world just by using the points on the 10 credit cards that he had. AND what’s more awesome is that he travel only by business class….

Here are some tips to accumulate your points:

  • Don’t change your spending habits by spending more to accumulate credit/loyalty points. Generally, these programs will always psychologically try to trick you into spending more. Instead, use your card to pay for your usual purchase or offer to pay for your family and friends.
  • Research into partner bonus. Eg Shopping at a department store will give you 3 points for every dollar spent.
  • You can also earn point by scanning your card when you fill gas up in your car. Eg scanning your Velocity card with BP
  • Load cash into your Velocity card for daily use to earn quicker
  • Look into credit card sign up bonus. AMEX offer signs up bonus all the time. Eg you will get 100 000 points when you sign up, T&Cs apply. You will need to be earning over 65k a year to be eligible etc…
  • Sign up to credit cards with $0 to low annual card fees
  • Carefully read the T&Cs on international spending, balance transfer and late payment fee
  • if you are someone who is not good at management your money then having a credit card or multiple credit cards is a risk, not a benefit. So these tips will not work with just anyone.
  • Please consider all the risks carefully before signing up to a credit card, as you could be subject to paying heavy late payment fee and will end up spending more instead of maximising your savings.

Some Programs that I am currently on are:

  1. Credit cards with reputable Banks ( CBA/NAB/Westpac)
  2. Loyalty cards with Woolworths, Coles, Myers, Priceline
  3. Frequent flyer program ( Velocity)

Honestly, I have not been using these cards much so the points accumulation is a banana at the moment.

I will start using them and report my achievements OR failure back in 3 months 🙂

Mothers Day – Yesterday

Happy Mothers day!

I chose my first post to be on Mothers day because it is a gift to all the mothers and mother-going-to-be out there!..its still Mothers day today in the US 🙂

Mothers Day over time has diverted from just having a simple dinner as a family at home to showering Mums with expensive gifts, flowers and go to fancy restaurants. I mean this is great. However, I disagree with how much marketing is going on in the background.

What did you guys do for your mum on Mothers day?

In the past year, I have always purchased something for my mum. However, this year I have decided to do something different…that is, taking her out for dinner.

I have learnt that:

  • Do not go out on the weekend of Mother’s day..the WORSE mistake. It is packed everywhere, everyone is angry on the road and everybody is pushy if you are trying to get into a restaurant
  • Prices go up by double in a restaurant. Not the actual price itself, but the quality and quantity of food just decreases dramatically.
  • Every day is Mothers day, so let celebrate a week before or a week after 🙂

Do share some of your worse and the best experiences on Mothers day! We might have something in common.

Ciao for now :]
